Samuel was the son of John Bartley and Eliza Oxborrow. He married Ella Gideon on December 6, 1882. They were the parents of 8 children: Florence, Walter, Willie, Ray, Thurlow, Hazel, Cecil, and Fay.

Oct 9, 1913 - Humboldt Independent - Samuel S Bartley, the eldest son of Job Bartley, was born near Beechville, Oxford county, Ontario, Canada May 12, 1858 and died at his home near Laurens, Iowa, September 30, 1913, aged 55 years, 4 months, and 18 days.

Mr. Bartley came with his family to Iowa and settled in Humboldt county April 5, 1880. He was married to Ella Gideon December 6, 1882. To them were born eight children, seven of whom are still living: Florence and Walter in Leroy, Montana; Ray, Thurlow, Hazel, Cecil, and Fay at the home at Laurens. Willie, the second child, died at the age of three years. He also leaves two sisters and two brothers to mourn his loss.

In the spring of 1908 he moved with his family to near Laurens in Pocahontas county, where he resided until he died. The funeral occurred on Thursday last, by a short service at the home, after which the funeral cortege came to Rutland where a service was held in the M.E. church. Rev. W.E. Blackstock officiating in both cases. The burial took place in Union cemetery near Humboldt.

Mr. Bartley was rated and esteemed highly by all who knew him, and his family have the widest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to them from all ways.
