Helen Devett Barnes, 79, died Tuesday at Liberty Regional Medical Center.

She was born in McCormick, S.C., to the late James and Freddie C. Devett on March 5, 1928.

She was united in Holy matrimony to the late Elmer Barnes Sr. To this union, one child was born. Mrs. Barnes was a deaconess and mother of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Cornelia Ann Edwards of Hinesville; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Salathiel and Fongce-yu Chin of Clarkston.; three granddaughters, Imani, Ayana and Jaida; one sister, Lottie Houston of East Orange, N.J.; one brother, Willie C. Devett of East Orange; two brothers-in-law, Harry Baker of East Orange and Herman Samuel Sr. of New York City; one godchild, Fraya Fraiser; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Viewing will be 6-7 p.m. Friday at Dorchester Funeral Home.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and the Rev. M.L. Jackson will officiate. Interment will follow at Midway Congregational Church Cemetery. Dorchester Funeral Home of Midway has charge of the arrangements.
