In the presence of her loving family, Faunda Ree Nelson Hatch departed this life Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, after an extended illness.
She was born April 15, 1925, in Burton, Madison County, Idaho, to Sterling and Leah Young Nelson. She attended schools in Rexburg, graduating from Madison High School in 1943.
Soon after graduation, she accepted employment as a stenographer for the quartermaster division of the Ninth Service Command at Fort Douglas. She was active in the social life at Fort Douglas and was encouraged by friends to enter a widely publicized beauty contest sponsored by a community affairs organization at Fort Douglas. She won the contest.
In the fall of 1944, Faun, as she came to be known, moved to Logan, Utah, to attend Utah State University. She studied a variety of subjects but was most interested in an introductory course in meteorology and ended up taking advanced classes in that subject.
Besides attending college, she took a part-time job with a garden and greenhouse business in North Logan, where she learned to love gardening and working with plants -- a study that followed her for the rest of her life.
Faun met Sergeant Myron Hatch as he was completing service with the military at the end of World War II. They were married Sept. 11, 1946, in the Idaho Falls Temple.
Following the wedding, Myron accepted employment in Richland, WA, becoming affiliated with the Manhattan Project (the source of the first atomic bomb). He transferred to work at the INL in 1949, making their home in Idaho Falls, situated in the Lincoln area. An opportunity to work for the Infrared Company in Salt Lake City was their reason to return to Utah, choosing to take permanent residency in Alpine, Utah.
She is survived by her five children: Denton (Susan), of Payson, Stanley (Christy), of Albuquerque, NM, Shelley (Roger) Moore, of Plains, MO, Pamela Gibby, of American Fork, and Jennifer (Rhett) Barney, of Alpine; a sister, Mrs. Tarrell Hatch, of Idaho Falls; 25 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 16, in the Cedar Hills 8th Ward Chapel, with Bishop Duane Bernards conducting, and burial in American Fork Cemetery.
