Harley Bricker, 87, of Bryan, died Monday morning, Sept. 6, 2004, at Hillside Country Living's Anna House near Bryan.
A member of Grace Episcopal Church in Defiance and a former member of the Bryan Rotary Club, he married Marlynn J. Hazzard of Ionia, Mich. on April 2, 1937 at Angola, Ind. and she preceded him in death on July 4, 1994.
A chemical engineering graduate of Michigan State University in 1939, he had operated a growing electroplating business since 1950. Following his graduation from Michigan State, he was a research chemist for the McGean Chemical Co. of Cleveland for two years. He became head of the metallurgical department of Ryerson Noyes in Jackson, Mich. in 1942 and moved to the metallurgical department of Willys Overland, Toledo, in 1945. During this time, he developed metallurgical processes improving production capabilities for the war effort, such as softening metals for machining speed and hardening metals after machining.
He joined the Napoleon Plating Company in 1947 and a year later opened his own laboratory in Napoleon to do special research in plating. This led to a connection with the Nameplate & Monogram Company, Spencerville, in 1949, as head of all plating operations. In addition, he did consultant work for a number of firms including Ohio Decorative, of Spencerville; Airway Corp., of Toledo; and Lectrolite of Defiance.
He opened a metal finishing company in Defiance in 1950. This business was destroyed by fire and operations moved to Bryan in 1957. This business continues at this location on East Edgerton St. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Richard (Becky) Kocerha of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert (and wife, Judy) Bricker of Winter Park, Fla., Jon Bricker of Fort Wayne, Ind., James (Kathy) Bricker of Fort Mill, S.C., Harley Bricker Jr. of Lakeland, Fla. and Timothy (Martha) Bricker of Bryan; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
