William was the eldest son of Thomas Alder and Charlotte Tuckey. Thomas had emigrated to the London Ontario region from Glouchestershire, England. William came to Cartwright Manitoba in 1888 and opened the first blacksmith shop in the town. In 1890, William purchased a farm southeast of Cartwright in the Mylor School District. William and Bell farmed in the area all their lives. In 1907, William's brother Fred Alder purchased a neighbouring farm. Fred later moved to Alberta, and his farm was eventually purchased by his nephew Carmen Alder. In their later years, William and Bell built a house on their son Carmen's farm where they lived until their passing.
