Herb was born in Bismarck, ND. His first job out of college was with Nash Finch Co. Herb held many positins during his 30 plus years at Nash Finch becoming a Vice President and a member of their board of directors. Herb's career led him to Buffalo, NY to replace the president of S. M. Flickinger. Shortly after arriving Herb was offereed an opportunity to come back to Minneapois and became President of Red Owl Stores. Herb retired from Red Owl at the age of 55 and retired to Rio Verde, Arizona with his wife Ruth. At age 56, Herb joined Supervalu to become president of Preferred Products the private label arm of Supervalu until he retired at age 65.
Herb served his country as a Captain with the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII.
With all of Herb's accomplishments nothing was more important to him than his friends and family. Herb kept in contact with boyhood friends, military buddies and business associates. Herb's biggest joy were the visits from his great grandkids, enjoying a tootsie roll sucker with his 2 year old great-grandson, or giving rides in his wheel chair, sharing holidays or just having them visit. He loved hearing stories from afar of what each of his grandkids were doing and what was going on in their lives.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the MN Masonic Home for all they did to make Herb's stay feel like a home and how they treated him with such respect and like a friend.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina (70th & 100) at 1 PM on Tuesday, September 27th. Memorials may be directed to MN Masonic Home, Bloomington.
