Lieut. Negley was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart.

Descendant of Major Edward Burleson

He is also listed in the Mission Burial Park South in the Negley family lot.
His remains were never recovered.

Lieut. Negley was a graduate of the USMA Class of 1939. He was the brother of Second Lieut. Albert S.B. Negley, who was taken prisoner at Battan and died on a Japanese transport he which was sunk in Subic Bay by American air action in 1945. He was also the great-great-grandson of General Edward Burleson, Vice-President of the Republic of Texas. His military awards included the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart.

Richard Van Wyck Negley, 26 was killed in action in the Pacific war February 8 the Army has advised his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Negley Sr. He was a member of a bomber crew. He was a grandson of former Postmaster General Albert Burleson and William Negley, pioneer San Antonion.

For heroic action in the Battle of Java the late Lieut. Richard V.W. Negley Jr. received posthumously the Distinguished Service Cross. He was copilot of a bombing crew, which caught by fifteen Jap fighters shot down seven of the attacking planes. They were forced to land in an isolated section where they fought off enemy attacks for two days.
