He was also the great-great-grandson of General Edward Burleson, Vice-President of the Republic of Texas. His military awards included the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart.

For heroic action in the Battle of Java the late Lieut. Richard V.W. Negley Jr. received posthumously the Distinguished Service Cross. He was copilot of a bombing crew, which caught by fifteen Jap fighters shot down seven of the attacking planes. They were forced to land in an isolated section where they fought off enemy attacks for two days.
