Mr. John L. Cantrell, 67, of Springfield died after an extended illness at his residence at Oakwood Village on Thursday, November 15, 2012. He was born August 24, 1945 in Springfield, Ohio the son of Mance and Maglene "Peg" (Conley) Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell was a 1963 graduate of Springfield South High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Theatre from Morehead State University in 1967, Master of Arts plus 30 in Spanish Language at la Universidad Internacional Instituto de Cultura de Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico in 1972, Poatgraduate 30+ Miami University Oxford, Ohio. He was a Spanish teacher and the Theatre Director at Piqua High School in Piqua, Ohio and Spanish teacher and Director of Theatre, Hamilton, Garfield and Hamilton High school, Hamilton, Ohio before returning to Springfield to be a Spanish Teacher and Director of Theatre at Springfield North High School, a Spanish Instructor at Clark State Community College, and from 1998-2011 he was a Spanish Instructor at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio.
Mr. Cantrell also served as Vice President of the Springfield Civic Theatre and member of the Ohio Lyric Theatre, Board Member of the Ohio Theatre Alliance, Columbus, Ohio, a recipient of the Ohio Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, two Ohio House of Representative Awards of Excellence in the Arts, Outstanding Citizen Award, Piqua, Ohio. Exemplary Employee award Springfield City Schools 1997, Outstanding Young Educator Award by Hamilton Fairfield Jaycees 1979, Membership in the NEA, OEA, S.W. Ohio Edn. Assn. Chairman of Foreign Languages 1980-1982: AASTP, OMLA and the MLA: Member of the Phi Kappa Delta, Wittenberg University.
Mr Cantrell was preceded in death by his parents, and his two brothers Raymond M. & James R. Cantrell.
The service to honor John's life will be Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the Memorial Home with Pastor rachel Tune of Wittenberg University officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Theatre or Spanish departments at Springfield High School, 701 E. Home Road, Springfield, Ohio 45503.
