A private in the 17th Company, 20th Engineers, John was killed in World War I as a result of a German U-boat attack upon the troopship SS "Tuscania" in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland on 5 February 1918.

His remains were recovered on the shores of the Scottish Island of Islay, where he was buried in the cemetery at Kilnaughton until the close of the war. His body was exhumed in 1920 and was placed aboard the ship "Antigone" to be sent to the United States. The "Antigone" arrived in Hoboken NJ on 29 September 1920. His body was then re-buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Big Falls, Minnesota.

He was the son of Emil Johnson (1860 Norway - 1928 MN) & Gena/Gina Maria Hanson (1871 Norway - 1918 MN) [usually listed as Carlson on her children's records, since her father was Carl Hanson]. In the 1900 census the family resided in Eddy, Beltrami County, Minnesota. In 1910 they lived in Big Falls, Koochiching County, Minnesota.

John's mother died 16 days before he sailed on "Tuscania." Less than a month later, her son John was dead.
