William came to California overland in 1846 with his parents' family from Missouri. After gold was discovered, he mined with his father and older brothers at Mormon Island, around latter-day Placerville, and, finally, on Kanaka Bar on the Tuolumne River above Jacksonville. His parents operated the Green Springs House, a hotel and freighting stopover between Copperopolis and Chinese Camp.

He died at Green Springs from consumption(tuberculosis).
