Civil War Confederate Army Major General. A graduate of West Point in 1842, he was serving as a Captain in the US Infantry when he resigned his commission to join the South as a Colonel in the Confederate 10th Georgia Infantry. Promoted Brigadier General in September 1861, he commanded the 2nd Division, Department of the Peninsula and Department of Northern Virginia. In July 1862, he was promoted Major General of the 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia serving until September 1863. From November 1863 to April 1865, he commanded the Departments of East Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida in actions until the end of the war. Following the Confederate surrender, he was in insurance agent, a tax collector and a postmaster.
