The Elmwood Burial records indicate he was Captain John B. Carnes. I believe him to be the son of David Brown Carnes and Mary Gracey, both from North Carolina. Mary Gracey Carnes died in Hardeman County Tennessee. John B. Carnes was supposedly born in Hardeman County Tennessee.

In addition, John B. Carnes lived for awhile in Tunica County Mississippi and because he owned so much land the town was named Carnesville. It was later changed to Dundee because there was already a town with a similar name of Carnesville.

In the 1880 Census for Tunica County Mississippi John B. Carnes is listed as a farmer. His 19 year old nephew, John Hamlin is living with him. Carnes is listed as being born in Tennessee with both parents being born in North Carolina.
