Elihu was the son of James A. Allison and Deliah Howard Allison. He was born in Hardeman County, Tennessee along with a twin brother, David Crockett Allison. The young boys came to Texas in 1835 while it was still part of Mexico.
Elihu married Phebe L. Jemeyson, Jan. 24, 1856 in Williamson County, Texas. They had the following children:

James Thomas Allison 1862-1943
William Elihue Allison 1864-1953
On 07 Aug 1863 at Willow Springs, Bell County, Elihu enlisted in Company A, 2nd Regiment, 27th Brigade under H.P. Hale, Brigadier General. The 27th Brigade was part of the Texas Militia.
By December, 1863 he had transfered along with three of his brothers, James, Thomas and William, to the 33rd Texas Cavalry Regiment, Company K.
The 33rd Cavalry Regiment was organized in April, 1863, by using the 14th (Duff's) Texas Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. Its members were recruited at San Antonio, Port Lavaca, and Mt. Vernon, and in Kaufman County. This unit served in Gano's and Hardeman's Brigade, Trans- Mississippi Department, and was active along the lower Rio Grande. In April, 1864, it was near Bonham, Texas, preparing for service in Arkansas.
While the unit was at Bonham, Elihu was recovering from measles when he was assigned guard duty in the rain, had a relapse, and died in service with CSA on June 24, 1864. He was buried near Bonham at an unknown Cemetery.
