Services for John Thurman Atherton, 89, of Canton, Texas, are scheduled for 2:00 pm Thursday November 1, 2012 at Eubank Chapel with David Bell officiating, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton.
Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mabank, Texas.
He passed away October 29, 2012 in Dallas, TX.
Mr. Atherton was born July 16, 1923 in Kemp, TX, to John C. and Bashie Williamson Atherton.
John was a member of the Teel Church of Christ. He grew up in Kemp, TX where he attended school. In 1950 he moved to Van Zandt County. He enjoyed farming, cows, gardening and he loved reading and watching WWII documentaries. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a devoted Christian man, his word was his bond. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Surviving are Wife, Barbara Atherton of Canton, TX, Daughter, Patricia Tackett of Garland, TX, Daughter, Mary & Larry Patrick of Chickasha, OK, Daughter, Dorothy & Dan McKinney of Canton, TX, Son, James Atherton of Canton, TX, 7 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Great Grandchild, 5 Sisters, 3 Brothers.
John was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife, Virgie Atherton, Grandson, John Patrick, Sister, Mary Guinn, Sister, Lula Geddy, Great Granddaughter, Faith, Brother, Carroll Atherton.
Pallbearers are Delbert Whitton, Kyle Whitton, Tom Selgas, Lynn Hughey, Jim Nelson, Steve Fuentes
Family will receive friends Wednesday 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
