Photo of Purviance Cemetery
Purviance Cemetery, south of Lancaster in Huntington County, Indiana. The cemetery sports a small, but impressive wrought iron entrance gate and steps, something not usually seen in these small pioneer graveyards. The Majority of the burials here occurred in the 1840's, 50's and 60's. There are a few 20th Century interments, the last in 1923. There are about 175 souls resting here, but many markers are missing. The earliest extant stone is that of Wilson J. Simons, died 1844 at the age of 6 months. One of the older settlers buried here is Jacob Marshall, 1764 1844.
