Photo of Christ Church Cemetery
After parishes were established in 1692, the Vestry at Bushwood applied to the General Assembly for funds to build a church nearer to the center of one of the parishes. Tradition says the famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren, designed the church (built in 1736) of red brick with Flemish bond and glazed headers. The land for the church was donated by Philip Key, High Sheriff of the colony, and the grandfather of Francis Scott Key. Several members of the Key family are buried in the Key Family vault. During the War of 1812, the British sailed up the Potomac River, vandalized the village of Chaptico, dug up graves, and stabled their horses inside the church.
