|The Armstrong Cemetery is located on private land on the west side of Bellfountain Road, about one-half mile south of the intersection of Bellfountain Road and Airport Road. |
The original owner was William HENKLE, who purchased the Donation Land Claim of Jacob MARTIN in 1867. In 1869, William HENKLE'S Father-in-law, Michael H. WALKER, died and was buried on William HENKLE's property. His was the first burial in the cemetery. There are approximately 20 graves here, of these about 13 are marked. There are no ARMSTRONGS buried in the cemetery, which is supposedly named for former owners of the property.
In 1867 William HENKLE sold 130 acres in this location to R.M. and Barbara HANSON. A year after the family's move to this location, in 1877, the HANSONs four of their six children in an outbreak of diphtheria. The graves of these children are all located within the confines of a very ornamental wrought iron fence. R.M. HANSON was buried in this plot upon his death in 1889. The fence, which is partly collapsed, was patented by Crowell in 1865. The fence was reinforced at some point by a concrete base. The wrought iron fence, one of only two in the county, may date to 1876 and should be preserved.
