Photo of Great Lakes Shipwrecks Museum
Upper image. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Lower image. Overall view at Whitefish Point, which is the site of the 150 year old Whitefish Point Light House, still in service. The lighthouse was automated rendering the surrounding structures where families lived while tending the light obsolete. The abandoned buildings became rundown and were slated for demolition. However, The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society obtained title to the property declaring it an historical site. They have refurbished the buildings while establishing a Shipwreck museum in a former service building. The entire complex is owned and operated by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society and has become a huge tourist destination.
