|The Center Building was the first building on campus occupied by patients when the asylum opened in 1883. Many years later it was named the Avery Building. The hospital was first named the Western NC Insane Asylum but by 1890 was called the State Hospital at Morganton at the request of the Superintendent, Patrick L Murphy, MD. In 1959 its name was changed to Broughton Hospital in honor of Governor Melville Broughton.|
The design of this building follows the Kirkbride Plan utilized at many US asylums of the period.
