Photo of Saint Josephs Cemetery
Contrary to popular belief Saint Joseph Cemetery or "Rotten Bayou" as it has been called for years is not located in Pass Christian, but infact it is located in Hancock County. The property of 40 acres was donated to Hancock County on August 7, 1893 by the 9 children of Francois Cuevas for use as a public cemetery. Francois Cuevas was the second son of Juan Cuevas who settled Cat Island. The name "Rotten Bayou" is derived from legend surrounding Native American Folklore. Native Americans once butchered much of thier game on the banks and threw the waste in the bayou they called "Benashiva" which means "Rotten Bayou" hence the name of the cemetery.
