Photo of Old German Cemetery (Defunct)
The large triangular area was the Old German Cemetery located on S. Main St. In 1891 an ordinance was passed prohibiting further burials within city limits. This cemetery was neglected and abandoned, with those bodies claimed by family being moved to other locations. Any unclaimed bodies were said to have been moved to the Paupers Grave at Westmoreland Manor Nursing Home (in about 1957). However, that is not entirely true. The old head-stones were simply pushed over the hill down onto Euclid St. by dozers and trucks came in and took away the rubble. Upon bull dozing for the small plaza and parking lot that was built over the cemetery site, several bones were unearthed. Westmoreland Manor has been repeatedly questioned about the records and they claim they do not have records of remains being brought and re-interred at the Manor. The Paupers Graves are now on Prison grounds behind the Manor and visitation is prohibited. Therefore, many remains lie beneath the parking lot of the plaza beside City Hall. City Hall has been contacted many, many times regarding records and they claim all records are in the basement "somewhere" and cannot be located. After more inquiries (9-8-2011 being the last date I was there), they now claim there are NO records. Hmmmm! Footnote: before becoming a parking lot/shopping plaza the cemetery site was used as a childrens playground. (Kinderhook Playground) Such disrespect to the deceased.
