This is the original site of the Rock Island Prison Barracks Union Cemetery. The sign reads:

The following Union Army soldiers were originally buried at this site but were later reinterred in the National Cemetary on Arsenal Island.

4th U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps - 26 dead
37th Iowa Volunteer Graybeards - 5 dead
45th Wisconsin Volunteers - 1 dead
48th Iowa Volunteers - 100 day enlistments - 3 dead
133rd Illinois Volunteers - 100 day enlistments - 12 dead
197th Pennsylvania Volunteers - 100 day enlistments - 5 dead
Unassigned - 1 dead 3 U.S. Volunteers - 1 dead

The aforementioned soldiers served as guards at the Confederate Prison located on Arsenal Island during the Civil War.
