Photo of Forbes Cemetery
The Forbes Family Cemetery is on the original Forbes homestead land of 1831. There are about 60 burials there, 45 burial names are known. Pioneers and civil war veterans are amongst the burials there going back to the mid 1800s. The last known burial was in 1928. In the late 1960s you could still see the neatly maintained fenced cemetery with the rows of markers coming down to the road. - Sadly things have changed. Caleb Forbes 1879-1960 was the last Forbes to live on the land. His daughter then rented the land for farming. A tenant farmer tore down the fence and standing stones began to be heaped in piles by some trees. Each year less stones could be found in the burial area. The Forbes cemetery has been subject to great abuse. These two large stone are not so easy to discard so crops can be planted on the land. Too bad greedy people with no respect for others like the tenant farmer exist. It is sad that Illinois does not have laws to protect such family cemeteries where pioneers and veterans are buried.
