Photo of Barnett Cemetery
We had several documents that directed us to the Barnett Cemetery near Chebanse, IL. One, a Smith/Buckner Family History Notebook compiled by Martha Lincoln Smith Nickerson. She compiled the notebook over a period of time ca. 1890-1900. Martha was a daughter of Catherine Buckner and Isaac Smith, and granddaughter of Charles and Mary Buchner/Buckner.BURIED HERE She lists the births, deaths, and sometimes the burial places for her parents, grandparents and siblings and extended family. Martha listed the Barnett Cemetery as also the River Side Cemetery. For example Martha wrote, “Maryette Smith buried in the River Side Cemetery, or the Barnett grave yard.” Martha grew up near this cemetery and we feel that her writing most accurately describes the cemetery, therefore, we call it Barnett Cemetery (aka River Side Cemetery).the great-granddaughter of James Barnett who owned this land at the time it was used for burials, now owns this property. She lives in Chebanse, IL. She was so friendly and offered to guide us to the headstones. She provided gloves, shovel, hoe, etc. because the cemetery is not maintained but left in a “natural” state. Since we were there in May, the vegetation was very thick. Winter would be a better time to visit.
