|Memorial Day 2014 is on May 26. This day is set aside to celebrate and honor United States men and women who have died serving our country in the military. |
Memorial Day was inspired by the way people honored their dead in our southern States since our government did not recognize those who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War as heroes. Memorial Day began as an occasion to honor and celebrate Union Soldiers who died during that war. After the end of World War I, Memorial Day was extended to include ALL American men and women who died in any US military action or war.
Memorial Day was initially known as Decoration Day. The present name for this special day didn't come into use until the end of the World War II. Decoration Day used to be celebrated on May 30, despite of the day of the week on which it fell. In the year 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of an act to use federal public holidays to create three day weekends. This meant that, from the year 1971, Memorial Day has been legally observed on the last Monday in May of every year. For many Americans, Memorial Day unofficially marks the beginning of Summer, with family and friend get-togethers for outdoor cooking and other activities.
On this day visit your hometown veteran's cemetery and place a small American flag on the graves. This should be done very early in the morning. Visit veteran memorials and give your respect to the men and women who served and since passed away, and those who died while serving our country.
While honoring our country's heroes, have a SAFE and fun-filled Memorial Day with your loved ones and pets, Suse ❤★☆★❤
