|This is the headstone for my 3G-GF, Thomas Murray King (1790-1880). He is buried in the Duncan Cemetery on property that was once a part of his farm. Duncan is one of the older cemeteries in McCreary Co., Kentucky. It is located on a wooded hill that is located just a few miles from the little community of Kingtown. |
My grandfather, Thomas Letcher King (1881-1973), was born not far from here, near the 1st Otter Creek Baptist Church, on land that his GGF, Thomas Murray King, used to own. He was born just one year after his GGF's death and was named "Thomas" in his honor.
Thomas Murray King (TMK) is buried next to his wife, Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881), who he married in 1814.
Sometime during the 1825-28 time period, Thomas and Mary moved their family from Campbell Co., Tennessee to McCreary Co. (then Whitley Co.), KY where the last seven of their fifteen known children were born. In 1841 they helped establish the Marsh Creek Baptist Church before moving to the King's Valley area. TMK is the patriarch of the King family in McCreary County and once owned over 2,000 acres of land in the lower part of the county.
