Civil War Time
The Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865.

Mary Rose was born in 1867.

She might have been the first child in the marriage or there might have been other children before her.

John F. or T. Rose could have married right after or the war ended or during the war.

Some records say he was born in 1841 and others 1844, that was defintely old enough to marry.

New Information
I did more research and found this information.

Clara Ramey (note the different spelling) was born in 1863 and married John Rose on July 4, 1882

She was 19. He was 41.

That meant he married a woman four years older than his daughter (a common practice).

Her parents were-

William A. Ramey (note the difference in spelling) and Margaret Coon
married 18 Jan. 1863
in Hamilton County, Indiana

Clara was born within a year of the marriage, but I cannot find the parents or her on any census records. My theory is the marriage was a short one or one or both died and she was either raised by relatives or used a stepparents name (a common practice)

John Rose is on the 1880 census record with Kessie/Hiesann. Either she died or they divorced by July, 1882.

We know Maude Frances Rose was born June 19 1889.

However there is no 1890 census record, making research difficult.

Maude Frances Rose age 11 is living as a boarder with Scrilda Phillips in Martin county - age 65 in Martin County, (Shoals), Indiana - in 1910- likely this proximity is how she met Frank McLin. (same neighborhood, school or church)

Perhaps the Phillip's family has some information.

I cannot find John Rose and Clara Rose on any census record, leading me to think one or both died, leading to Maude living as a boarder elsewhere.

Also who is this Mrs. John Gharast mentioned in Mary Rose's obit? I cannot find anyone by that name anywhere.

Finding John Rose's wife Kessie/Hiesann's obit in Daviess County might be helpful and is probably between 1880-82.

The Rose name may also have been spelled Roos or Roosa in the past.

Hope this is helpful and together we can solve this mystery.

Here is what I have
I have the same info as Brittany.

But here is more

Clara Ramie/Raime (instead of Raney)
f. William Raime m. Marg. Coon

Could this be Clara Raney?

John Rose b. N.Y. father born N.Y. Mother born Canada is on the 1870 census age 26
in Washington County with

Kessie 25 b. Tenn.
Mary 3 b. IN (this is Mary Bashby)
James 6 months IN (disappears- must have died)

1880 census Daviess county
John Rose (fisherman?) age 35 NY
Hiesann age 32 Tenn (probably Kessie)
Mary 13 IN
Elizabeth 7 IN
Eliza 4 IN

I can't find anything on Eliza or Elizabeth - if anyone knows something tell me please.

I would also like to know who Kessie/Hiesann is.

Does anyone have death certificates or more obits?

Here is more (this might be one person)

Maggie White - mother Clara Rainy and father John Rose marries William English in 1910

Margaret Burrie- mother Clara Rainy and father John Rose marries Francis Leffler

I found Maude Rose (I think) living in Martin County, Indiana with another woman.

Did John and Clara die and leave orphans?

Obviously there is no 1890 census but there should be a 1900 one with info on this family.

I think they might have traveled to Illinois too.

As for the Palamatier name (lots of spellings) it is a popular name in New York and Canada.

I found a John Rose listed as an inmate in someplace in Indiana born 1843 but couldn't open the record.

I seem to remember finding a John Rose and Kessie on an 1860 census in Indiana but can't find it now - he would have been about 16 (old enough to marry but not old enough to fight)

Hope you find that family bible - that would have valuable information.

RE: John F. Rose
Hi William,

So I have finally gotten a chance to look into more information about John F. Rose.

Maude's marriage record states that her father's name was John Francis Rose and that her mother's name was Clara Raney.

I found a marriage record for them in Marion County, Indiana on July 4, 1882. The marriage record states that his father's name was George Rose and his mother was Elizabeth Coe. Does that sound right to you?

I'm not related to the Rose or McLin family that I know of, I just like helping others in their search. Do you know when he died? Maybe I can find an obituary?

One thing about John Palmetier, Mary Bashby Rose was born in 1867, if he wasn't old enough to join in the fighting, why was he old enough to have kids? Not ruling it out completely, just a thought.
