I've always loved cemeteries. They are such serene, beautiful places---I feel the same kind of peace in a cemetery as when I'm in church. I hope to pass on this appreciation to my daughter. When she was younger and not as busy as she is now, we would take a blanket and a nice lunch and enjoy a picnic near an interesting headstone. I don't want anyone to think of cemeteries as scary places. They're not. They are parks full of wonderful people who were once very much alive, doing the same kinds of things we are all doing, and now they rest and dream...|

Are there dates on Franz's headstone? Can you add him to the cemetery listing and add the photo so I can see it? I will have to do some investigating I guess, thank you!
|Peggy Doyle||RE: Thoms|
I do not know of a Franz, I do not know any of Carl's family, have not been able to find them. Depending on the dates for Franz he could very well be a relative, I don't think he is a child of Anna and Carl. There was only the one boy child, Robert, that I know. My Grandparents Adam and Anna Fox and their 2 children were killed when their car was hit by a train on a trip to Southern Indiana (Adam's home, they were going to have his family meet his wife and children for the first time)My Mother Shirley was the only survivor (She was 14 months old) because she was seated on her Mother's lap and was cushioned but she still was in the hospital for a long time. Anna was also pregnant at the time of the accident. My Mom was raised by Anna Heitmann Thoms, her Grandmother who was 62 at the time..Carl died from the grief of losing his daughter and grandchildren. I will look into Franz, I would dearly love to find more family for Carl and Anna, immigration has them coming over separately and alone, I don't believe they knew each other until they got to Illinois.

I found Saint Matthew's in Hawthorne Woods, thank you so much.
The obituary for my Great Grandparents 'Voelling'
published that they were buried at the Fairfield Cemetery, and I (unintentionally) added Lutheran. When I asked for a photo of their headstones, I was told they were in the St Matthew's section very close to Fairfield Cemetery. Since your so familiar with the residents of St Matthew's, are the Voelling's at St Matthew's Cemetery of Hawthorne Woods? Like I said, I get really confused about this Cemetery.
Thank you for your guidance and patience.
I know the church has been there for 150 years, and has been under 4 seperate directors. I assumed the Cemetery was on the same property as the Church. I live in Arizona, so I have to imagine some things.
One of the families that I am still looking for is Herman and Melwina (Hillmann) Schultz (daughter of Herman and Marie Hillmann). Melwina died in 1946, but I'm not sure if they were buried at St Matthew's or not. If you see any Volling's or Voelling's buried there, I would appreciate that information.
You seem like a very wonderful person.
God Bless you,

|Peggy Doyle||Thoms in St. Matthews|
Thank you for the correction as to the site of Anna and Carl Thoms. I knew as soon as I saw the picture of the cemetery itself that they were not in Fairfield and are in St. Matthew (The last time I went to visit them was at least 40 years ago). I have deleted the listing for Fairfield and created one for St. Matthew for both of them. I did not move the pictures as I did not want it to appear that they were mine. Please feel free to repost in the right place. Also thank you for the obit info on Anna, she was my Great Grandmother.

Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures. You did a remarkable job.
I really get confused about the Fairfield Lutheran Cemetery and the St Matthews Lutheran Cemetery. Do you know if the cemetery name has been changed?
Their daughter and son-in-law are buried in that cemetery also, I added a note on their memorials explaining that it is now called St Matthews Lutheran Cemetery.
I tried to look up St Matthews Lutheran Cemetery under Cemetery Lookup and I'm only finding one in Niles with 28 memorials.
Also, may I use the pictures that you took for our family tree on Ancestry.com?
I would give you the credit for taking the pictures.
I really appreciate what you did, thank you very much.
