RE: John Thomas
Hello again Kay. To answer your questions I had to retrieve some documentation & refresh my memory, so here goes. I am descended from John Thomas III (1792 -1870)& Margaret Fain. John III was son of John Thomas, Jr. and Rachel Crumley and, apparently, brother of your ancestor William Madison Thomas whose middle name is sometimes given as Henry.

Buncombe County NC was wilderness/ frontier country when our ancestors lived there. John Jr. & Rachel followed his father John Thomas, Sr. and his wife (name uncertain) from outside Newberry SC to Buncombe County about between 1795 and 1800. In about 1820 John Jr. & Rachel moved to Habersham County, GA when John SR. died.

John Thomas, Sr. (1745-1820) seems to have had 3 wives and sired 8 children. It is nearly impossible to identify which wife had which children but accounts generally agree on their names.

John, Jr. & Rachel each grew up around Newberry SC (96 District) in farms very close to one another and married there about 1791. Rachel & her parents has moved there by 1779 from Frederick County, VA near Winchester. Her parents were John Crumley ((1737-1794) and Hannah Faulkner (1740-1794. They originally hailed from Chester, PA.

John Crumley's parents were James Crumley (1712-1764) and Catherine Bowen (1710-1799). Some records list her last name as Gilkey. John was an immigrant but records differ on whether he was from England or Ireland. Whichever, he arrived in Chester PA as a Quaker and became a very successful man. He moved to Winchester VA and into what is now Berkeley County, WV.

I have more on these families in my summary but sincerely hope this is of interest & assistance to you.
Best regards,

RE: John Thomas
Good morning Kay. I learned of my connection with John & Rachel about a year ago through DNA testing. I live near Charleston SC and was shocked to see that John & Rachel lived & married in Newberry SC. I did a lot of research on them & their families and am happy to share it with you if you're interested and don't mind giving me your e-mail address. It's a 5 page Word document that I can send as an attachment. Or, if you prefer I can mail a hard copy via the USPS if you'll let me have your address.

The summary covers the Crumley family background and answers some of your questions regarding the Thomas family as well. I will answer those questions it doesn't address in a follow up message shortly.

My email address is
Many thanks,

RE: John Thomas
Hello Kay. What I find indicates John died in Habersham County about 1828. His burial site remains a mystery but I intend to keep working on it. Hope this helps you some.
Best regards,
