 | RE: family memorials I am sorry, but I will not be in the Toledo area any time soon. I hope you will be able to find someone else to help you complete your family tree.Added by R J on Jan 23, 2013 7:13 AM | | | Twist
 | RE: family graves Hi Marilyn. I will try to get the photos you are looking for - but right now, the cemetery markers are probably under snow/ice. Remind me as things begin to warm up and I will see what I can do. Are you sure there are markers? Regards.Added by Twist on Jan 22, 2013 2:46 PM | | | C Roth
 | RE: West in NC I'm guessing the West family has not been listed as a first family yet? HOW EXCITING! I thought maybe Dorothy had already done it. I really hope you can get this done. Yes, this election can't come soon enough. I am ready for it to be done.Added by C Roth on Nov 05, 2012 3:31 PM | | | C Roth
 | RE: West in NC I reached Dorothy by sending a letter to OBCGS, and they sent it on to her. That was a few years ago, and at that time she was no longer working on genealogy, because of age. That's why I recommend seeing if OBCGS has the records you are looking for. She may have turned all her research over to them. I joined the DAR using my mom's side of the family, who came to America in the 1600's. The West family is on my dad's side of the family, and don't think they were involved in the American Revolution. John West Sr. was supposedly born in England about 1765, and I would guess he came after the war, but not sure. With that said, it's possible his wife's family (Martha Whitaker) was part of the revolutionary war. I think they were here before him. It was nice of you to suggest sending me something from your state of California, but just knowing you are working to have our West family included in the 1st families of Buncombe County, is more than enough. That would be worth a trip to North Carolina to see the West name added. Never been there, but would love to visit.

 | RE: West in NC I hope one of these have what you're looking for. You might try familysearch website. You can order on loan from their catalog section microfilm, to be sent to a family center near where you live. I have found records here that could not be found anywhere else. The Old County Buncombe Genealogical Society website also has records you can order to buy. You may want to find out if Dorothy Hyde has already found the link for the 1st and 2nd West generations. Even though her lineage splits off from you and me at the 3rd generation, it would still be what you are looking for. OBCGS may know. Hope to e-mail you the original West obits from Nebraska, and the pension papers this weekend.Added by C Roth on Nov 02, 2012 8:08 PM | | | C Roth
 | RE: West in NC Looked at what I had for a link between John West Sr and Jeremiah. Nothing. The only thing I know is that according to the books, John had land grants for two tracts of fifty acres in 1794, 300 acres in 1801, and 200 acres in 1822. You might try looking at land records for this, if not already done. Also, what about probate records? Do you want any of the Mexican War Pension records for Jasper West? One section shows the link between Jeremiah and Jasper.Added by C Roth on Oct 31, 2012 7:02 PM | | | C Roth
 | RE: West in NC Don't know about the headstones for Jasper and Sarah West. Did someone say they are new? I do not plan to apply for the 1st families of Buncombe County, so am hoping you will. Sorry for the confusion. I was talking about having to go through the same process of proving the family links for joining the DAR. Probably is similar to what you will have to do in joining 1st families of Buncombe. Can be a very exhausting process, so will leave it up to you. Christine

 | RE: West in NC I think it would be great if you were able to get John and Martha West recognized as a 1st family in Buncombe County. I don't know of anyone who has applied, so go for it. I will look to see if I have anything else that would help you, besides the photo-copied original newspaper obits. When I contacted Dorothy many years ago, she had said she was adding markers in front of Jeremiah and Mary West's headstones, because the originals were unreadable. One other thing Dorothy told me, there was also another older Jeremiah West, and not to get him confused with our ancestor. She thought it may have been a brother of our ancestor John West. As far as Jasper and Esther West in Syracuse, I think I would like to go back to the cemetery and see if I just overlooked their markers. It was quite a few years ago when first starting my genealogy searches, and may not have been as thorough in looking.Added by C Roth on Oct 30, 2012 4:38 PM | | | Pamela Sitler
 | Forest Cemetery Marilyn,
I'm stretched pretty thin right now between working full-time and raising my six year old granddaughter. If an opportunity arises, I'd love to help. Did you request a photo through the site?

 | first family member Was thinking about your applying for first family status for West family. If you need photocopies of the original newspaper obituary, let me know. They also have marriage records at the Nebraska archives. I went through the same process with another side of my family, when joining the DAR. (Daughters of the American Revolution) Good luck to you.Added by C Roth on Oct 29, 2012 8:40 PM | | | | [View all messages...] |
