 | RE: Denis Arthur Winstanley There is no need to send me the same correction by both sac and mesage, one is sufficient, you know they are always raken care of. However, the dupe of my memorial by your friend is still there, you might want to remind him. | | | geoffrey gillon
 | RE: MRS. (HENRY) SIDGWICK
It is not intended to be at all humourous, nor is it feeble in any way.
Stonemason's errors are so notorious that I frequently have to point them out with the accepted Latin adverb.
I am satisfied that I have made it clear that the inscription is intended to read Newnham.
Principal of Rewnham [sic] College, Cambridge from 1892 to 1910.Newnham College is a women-only constituent college of….
This is a matter I have to deal with frequently-stonemason's errors are so common that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will not accept headstone inscriptions as evidence.
The Latin adverb sic ("thus"; in full: sic erat scriptum, "thus it had been written") added immediately after a quoted word or phrase (or a longer piece of text), indicates that the quotation has been transcribed exactly as found in the original source, complete with any erroneous spelling or other nonstandard presentation. The usual purpose is to inform the reader that any errors or apparent errors in the transcribed material do not arise from transcription errors, and the errors have been repeated intentionally, i.e., that they are reproduced exactly as set down by the original writer or printer. Sic is generally placed inside square brackets, or in parentheses (round brackets), and traditionally in italic, as is customary when printing a foreign word.

 | RE: Cambridge OK -slip of the 'pen'.
Without meaning to sound pedantic, the churchyard and it's extension are best not described as 'cemeteries'-there is enough confusion already by wrong naming.
When I next go to Cambridge it will be primarily to visit the American Military cemetery but I will stop first at Trumpington. If there is time, after my work at the Cambridge American, I will try to get along to the Ascension Burial Ground. | | | geoffrey gillon
 | RE: Cambridge There are three burial sites in Trumpington, opened in the following order. The original churchyard The Church Cemetery -about a mile distant and incorrectly described as the Parish Extension or New Churchyard. The extension churchyard-opened on land adjacent to the original churchyard which was not available at the time the church cemetery was created. I had them split accordingly, but someone at findagrave, in their wisdom, has yet again interfered with my work and thus created confusion.
I guess your Sir Charles Darwin is in the original churchyard | | | geoffrey gillon
