|Bruce Rova||RE: Emmett Cemetery|
It IS a difficult one to find on your own, but I can get you there I think. If you have a GPS, you will want to find the intersection of Gordon Landing Road and Ralph Cooley Road in north Santa Rosa County...the easiest way to get to it is to take Hwy 87 north from Milton to where it meets Highway 4. Turn right and go east about two miles until you see Gordon Landing Road on your right. Turn right onto Gordon Landing Road and follow it winding south until you see first Friendship Road and then Ralph Cooley Road on your left. Here you probably will need to go left on Ralph Cooley Road and stop at the first house on the right - see the man who lives there. His wife is a Jernigan or Lewis who has kin in the Emmitt/Lewis Cemetery. He was the president of the gun club that leases the land, and he had a key to the gate that will allow you to get back to the cemetery in a vehicle if the road isn't too washed out. When we last talked with him about two years ago he was weak from cancer treatment. He and his wife are both quite nice, and if they can't take you over, perhaps he or she can get another member of the club to assist you. I got a name and phone number from him to call to see when they were going to do the next cemetery cleanup, and I think it is his name, but am not sure...the name I got as a Point of Contact was: Frank Loving and the phone number was 850-994-9181. I suggest you call before driving all the way out there.
To get to the cemetery, you would go south from Ralph Cooley Road on Gordon Landing Road until you find the next dirt road that cuts back some on the right side of Gordon Landing Road. As you drive back in on that road, after first being headed sort of westnorthwest, the road will turn more west and you will come to the hunting club's locked metal bar gate. If you are brave, you CAN Park here and walk back to the cemetery, but it is a LONG walk and awfully HOT this time of year.
I will be working as a volunteer at the West Florida Genealogical Library at 5740 N. 9th Avenue in Pensacola on Tuesday morning from when it opens at 10 AM until about 1 PM if you would like to talk to me about it and have me show you on a map or on googleearth. The phone number there is 850-494-7373. It is a very good library for genealogical research.
