My volunteer project has been to research for the preservation of old burial records for Woodland cemetery.

I will also continually be checking memorials made on FAG by contributors with the cemetery records.

Short cemetery history:
The beginning of Woodland Cemetery dates back to 1824 when it was called Grove Cemetery. Grove Cemetery began in 1810 but no records have been found.
For years, Woodland Cemetery was managed by the Board of Trustees and the lot owners.
In 2002, a search for a buyer was accomplished by the Board of Trustees and the cemetery was sold to the City of Monroe.
I promised to voluntarily stay with my search to preserve old records for the cemetery except for when I had to take a break for a few years for health reasons.
I have since returned and am searching for obituaries at the Monroe County Historical Society archives to find old burials that might be missing from the beginning of the cemetery (about 1824 to 1920). Michigan did not require the cemeteries to keep record until 1920. So before 1920 a lot of information was retained in the sexton's head instead of making a record and when a sexton left the job, often went the record. As of this date, I have found over 200 burials to add.

I recently began making memorials for burials before 1900 to 1920 and after from Woodland burial records.

Until I think the burial record project is finished, I am available by email for any questions regarding old and new burials for preservation of Woodland Cemetery.

Burial Records in Monroe
Hi Jane,
We talked a while back about Stella Engle or Estella Engel wife of my husband's great grandfather Herman Engel. I see that you have people listed in the Woodland cemetery from a list of death records from the cemetery. I am trying to find my husband's uncle Albert Engel/Engle who was still born on Nov.24th, 1908. He was the son of Albert Karl and Olive (Dollie) (nee Ordway) Engel. The death record from the state of Michigan says that he was buried in Monroe, Michigan and the undertaker was listed as F.H. Humphrey. Is there any master list of burials in Monroe or Woodland to see if Albert could have been buried there? The rest of his family, parents and sibblings are buried in Roselawn in LaSalle. I am not sure when that opened, but I am assuming that it was after 1908. Estella (Stella) would have been Albert's step grandmother. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joy Engel

RE: Estella Kleiber Engle
Thanks! I really appreciate this. This woman is a mystery to me for the period of her life between living at home with her mother (1880) and her marriage to my husband's great grandfather in 1903. Thanks so much for all of your hard work on the Woodland Cemetery too!
Take care,
Joy Engel

Estella Kleiber Engle
Hi Jane,
Are you by chance related to Estella Engle? I was just wondering because my husband's great grandfather was her second husband, her first was a Burnan or Burnam and I can't find anything out about her before her marriage to Herman Engel/Engle my husband's great grandfather. Do you know anything about her history while married to this Burnam? Her obituary says she was survived by a son, but no name for him mentioned either. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Joy Gantt Engel

Thank you for the information. I found the cemetery through the Monroe Gen Society. It is called Monroe Potter's Field. I have moved his page to the correct cemetery.

RE: Re: Robert McBride Memorial# 11996254
Jane,

If you wish,, I can transfer the memorial. However, if you do not wish to manage it, you can use the edit tab to send suggestions. Or I could transfer and you could transfer back after adding your updates.

Mr. McBride is buried next to one of my ancestors, and I do not know if he is related or not. Would appreciate knowing if he is related to the Olmstead family.

Mary
