|Paula Harper||RE: Matilda Friend Parsons|
Like Lisa at Marpleton, I tried walking all through Braxton Memorial Cemetery about three summers ago and writing down all grave marker info. Later attempts to photograph them all have proven frightfully slow. That cemetery is like a crazy quilt - blocks of graves every which way. But it's still on my to-do list to take photos of all the inscribed markers.
The Army Corps of Engineers moved every grave they found when relocating cemeteries impacted by the backwaters of the Sutton Dam. That means there are dozens of small marble slabs marked UNKNOWN. Included on the slab is a numeric code given to that particular cemetery and a grave number specific to all unmarked found there. I cannot find an index that identifies each cemetery. Some have a slab identifying the cemetery but I don't think there's one for every one in the relocation project. (There are two large cemeteries in Braxton County built to reinter graves from flooded areas. The other is Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens for the Burnsville Dam which I have also tried to document).
However in my walking around I found no Parsons at BMC except Mary (1795-1890) who married Samuel Skidmore. And only a couple Friends I'll keep my eyes open when I go back though.

I know this cemetery very well! I have documented this entire cemetery and am related to at least 80% of the people buried here including great-grandparents, great-great grandparents, cousins and so on. There is not a stone for Matilda Friend Parsons but that is not saying that she is not buried there. There are quite a few of unknown burials in this cemetery.
Now there is a possibility her grave could have been moved to Braxton Memorial Gardens located near Sutton and Flatwoods, WV. When the Corps of Engineers built Sutton Dam, several cemeteries were relocated. Marpleton Cemetery was moved up farther on the bank but in the same location, but for some reason some graves were moved to Braxton Memorial cemetery instead of just being relocated in the Marpleton cemetery.
The only other option I know of is 2 small cemeteries that was said to be located near the Mud Lick area, apparently there is not a trace left of them now.
I'm sorry I could not have been of more help.

I grew up in Hacker Valley, of course this was the 1970's. But I'll ask my Dad (born 1937) if he knew of the Shinn's. Of course he wouldn't have actually known your GG Grandfather, but he may have heard stories or something :)
