RE: Temperance O. McCord
Hi, Julie. Yes, we corresponded earlier this year. I believe you're descended from James Monroe Butler, half-brother of my great-grandfather, John Riley Butler.
I, too, am at a dead end trying to find Temperance Butler's parents. I don't know where the name "McCord" came from but two different marriage records list her maiden name as "Butler", so I'm going with that, for now.
I do have a copy of those family Bible pages and they're perplexing to me. Do you have those? First, all but the last few entries of the first two pages appear to be in the same handwriting so I'm assuming someone wrote the entries no earlier than 1915, when Lydia died. (I'm not sure if the writer of the entry dated 1942 is the same as the others; the writing looks similar but feeble.)
Also, the third page, the one that references the "grate lite", appears to be from a smaller book and the border trim is different. More importantly, it doesn't mention Tempy. Plus, that entry is dated September 1, 1859. Tempy's headstone lists her death as April 6, 1854! And who are the other two women listed, Elizabeth Butler and Nancey Butler? Unless I'm missing something, that page doesn't seem to have anything to do with Temperance Butler or her family. What do you think?
All I know about Lydia Uptigrove is what I've learned on I'm sure you know she's buried in Butler Cemetery in Carroll County, TN. If I find anything more on her, I'll pass it along, and I'd appreciate hearing any news you learn about Temperance.
Thanks for writing; I love hearing from my "relatives".
