Bio and Links
Bio Photo Besides my family, I am working hard to add as many burials I can find for the Gretna Hook and Ladder Cemetery. This cemetery was started in 1858 and has to have literally thousands of burials. Many of the tombs are in poor condition and undreadable and the sexton will not give you any information on the burials there for the most part.

The second cemetery I am interested in is the McDonogh Cemetery in what is now Gretna, but what was Mcdonoghville at one time, and then St. Bartholomey in Algiers.

In St Charles Parish, I want to update the Des Allemands Mennonite Cemetery as well as the St. Charles Cemetery in Luling. If I run across an obituary where the person was from another state, etc. and see they were buried here, I will most likely add them.

My information comes from partial burials listed in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gretna as well as obituary and death notices and old papers. I do my best to NOT name living individuals. I also check the obituaries with the Louisiana State Death Indexes - both from the Louisiana Secretary of State Office and from Ancestry.com, I have researched in person many probate records from Gretna families, and last but not least, I have two video tapes of a partial walk-through of the cemetery and though it's time consuming, I am taking pictures of the tombs from the video (taken in 1997 in which some tomb markers are no longer here in 2012 (which is slow and extremely difficult to do)! So, please be patient, I will eventually get it all on! :)

When in doubt about something, I will try to track them down through birth, marriage, death and census records. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME IF YOU SEE AN ERROR!!! :)

I have been doing genealogical research since about 1992. It started as a Christmas present for my grandfather who knew very little about his LAQUE family, and expanded to the STONE, GEGENHEIMER, FISCHER, LANGRIDGE and more families in the Gretna, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana area. Doing this, I developed a "soft spot" for the "old Gretna" families. As a result of my research in Gretna, I have studied many of the old Gretna families that are NOT related to mine and have lots of information!!!

My tree expands into St. Charles and Terrebonne Parishes with the CANTRELLE, LEBOEUF, GASSEN, ST. AMANT families. My research also extends to my son and stepdaughter's families which brings in CRAWFORD in St. Tammany Parish, DODSON in Avoyelles Parish and in Tampa, Florida and DELAY and HARRIER in Illinois, Arizona, and Oklahoma.

IF SOMEONE CAN GET A BETTER PICTURE OF A GRAVE THAT I HAVE POSTED, I WILL NOT BE OFFENDED AND WILL HAPPILY TAKE MY PICTURE(S) DOWN. Just send me an email that you've uploaded new pictures to [name of person], and I will delete the ones I had on! :)

Happy Hunting,
Linda

P.S. I just recently found out that a book was published about the Hook and Ladder Cemetery. It is transcriptions from the tombs that were taken in November and December 2009. It was copied by members of the Vieux Carre Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and transcribed by Katharine Meyer Chamberlain. I just received my book and it is excellently done, with maps and is fully indexed. Ms. Chamberlain also transcribed McDonoghville Cemetery, St. Bartholomew and St. Mary's in Algiers (those two in one book) as well as Three Cemeteries in Plaquemines Parish, LA: St. Patrick's, Port Sulphur, LA; Nairn, LA; Unnamed Cemetery in Port Sulphur

If you are interested in purchasing these books, please contact Ms. Chamberlain at:
ktchamberlain_at_bellsouth.net

Richerson
Linda, I read in your Bio that you have done a lot of research on Gretna families. By chance do you have any information on Lena Day Richerson who was married to Richard Richerson? Lena died approximately 15 years ago. They are buried in Lakelawn in N.O., and her parents are buried in the 'Day Cemetery' in Liverpool, La. They owned some landmark properties in Gretna over the years including the 'Oasis Motel' back in the day. She is my Aunt.I am a newbie volunteer here, but I am also beginning to research my Ancestry. Thanks for any information or suggestions regarding my Aunt. Apologies if this is the incorrect forum for this request.

Hi Robin
Thanks for messaging me back about Daniel Benefield. He was married to my gg-grandmother but was not my direct relative. I just wanted to see if you had any additional information about him and her.

Thanks for responding though! And keep up the great work!
