Ruth are you family ? Philip Gerhardt was my Great Grandfather. His daughter Johanna Gerhardt- Scherer was my Grandmother. I know a little bit about him.......when he came here from Germany he became a piliceman in New York City...then entered the Civil War. He was wounded by a saber cut to the head. Then he moved to Freemont Center. When I was a little girl I used to spend summers in Callicoon at his daughter Edith and Fred Baer's farm. My husband and I live in Florida now. Hope to hear from you. Regards, Marilyn (Lynn) Scherer-Everett

Alvah Smith
Ruth, I saw where you added a picture of Alvah Smith and his twin sister to my Find A Grave site. Can I have permission to copy this picture for own personal use? Alvah's wife was the daughter of my great aunt Minnie Spitler Peters.

Are you by chance related to Alvah Smith?

Thank you.

RE: Mary Baird Canon/Cannon
Hi Ruth,
I checked it out it looks like the cemetery I was in when I was up there , but I would love to see the other pics. I've attached a excerpt from some of my records that shows my connection. The child Jacob Dietz is my great grandfather. John Rodger Schermerhorn's sister Catherine was married to Henry Cannon brother of Mary M Cannon ,both of which are the children of James and Mary Polly Cannon.

JOHN ROGER, son of (163) Jacob D. Schermerhorn and Eleanor Sparks; b. Nov. 1, 1816; d. Oct. 3, 1850; m. Dec. 21, 1837, MARY M. CANNON.
Eli, b. Dec. 10, 1838; d. Apr. 23, 1839.
Henry Cannon, b. Mch. 25, 1840; d. Sept. 24, 1907.
Jacob Dietz, b. Oct. 21, 1842; d. Feb., 1905.
Cornelius Knickerbocker, b. Feb. 6, 1845.
Sally Ann, b. May 2, 1850; d. Feb., 1905; m. Charles Cooper.
Hon. John Roger, b. Feb. 14, 1847; m. Mary Jane Wagner.
John R. Schermerhorn died while a young man, leaving his children fatherless at a very early age. Mary Cannon Schermerhorn was a descendant of the Bairds of Massachusetts, who built the Old South St. Church in Boston. Her grandmother on her father's side was a first cousin of Aaron Burr.
Jacob D. Schermerhorn was a soldier in the Civil War, a member of the 56th N. Y. Infantry. His brother Cornelius also served in the war and was killed in battle.

RE: Mary Baird Canon/Cannon
Ok Ruth, I'm only a little over the border in Pa. I was hoping to get there before I went on vacation but it's not looking good right now since I don't have anything ready and I've been doing alot of overtime lately. Hopefully in october.
