RE: Langley and John A. Land
This message was intended for my wife, I'm sure. But, somehow it was sent to me and I haven't checked my messages for months. She will respond as soon as she can.

RE: More on Langley Land
The W. L. Land born in 1836 is probably not closely related per the 1880 and 1870 census records. He was born in TN and his parents in AL and SC respectively. So he is not Jeremiah Land's brother. He is not the father of the William Land who died in 1902 and whose obit was in my great-grandmother's Bible. But he IS the W. L. Land who married Eveline Buckley in 1861. They do have an 8 year old son in 1870 (born 1862 like William Land) but this boy's name is Arthur. And he is also in the 1900 census as you mentioned.

Just found W. L. Land married in 1861. That could be the W. L. Land you found born in 1836. He'd be 25 at his marriage. And this is 1 year before the William Land who died in 1902 was born. http://register.shelby.tn.us/imgView.php?imgtype=pdf&id=000002000087

William Land d 1902
I checked the death records for Shelby Co. The register's website had misspelled his name (had it as Laud). But, I found the death certificate by searching on date of death. It says this William Land was born 1862 in TN. Both his parents were born in Virginia. Here's the link: http://register.shelby.tn.us/imgView.php?imgtype=pdf&id=100419020202

RE: Wm Langley Land
Here's more information that now is definitely pertinent. My great-grandmother's Bible (Mary Jane Norwood Land, wife of John A), which I have, has several newspaper clippings. One says "LAND - At residence No 113 Vance street, Sunday, February 2, 1902, at 5 o"clock p.m. William Land....(Hot Springs, Ark. papers please copy). It sounds like the W. L. Land who is in Hot Springs (and is same age as John A's brother, Langley) may be the William Land in this clipping. If so, he probably moved from Memphis to Hot Springs and then, apparently, back again. It's also possible though this William is Langley's son. But, there is a connection with Hot Springs. So far as a Land born in 1936: I don't know, but that birth date could make him Jeremiah Land's brother (Jeremiah was father of John A). However, I haven't come across him in my research. But, I'll search further.

More on Langley Land
BTW: When I responded I didn't realized my husband was still logged in. That previous message was from me.

I do have one piece of information re Langley. In 1878, John A. Land was a bartender in the saloon owned by W. L. Land. This was according to the city directory. I suspected W. L. may have been Langley but wasn't sure.

Langley and John A. Land
So glad to hear from you. I have not ever been able to find out what happened to Langley after his parents died. Can you tell me where you found the guardianship papers?

I'll have to get back with you about sons (and living male descendents) of John A. and Mary Jane Norwood Land after I check my records.

How are you related?
