Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am an artist living near Boston, Mass. As a child, I used to accompany my grandmother (Mrs. Jacob Wirth) on many trips to small, remote cemeteries around New England, where she would record names and dates from the stones as a volunteer for the Boston Globe archives. I became interested in cemeteries and made rubbings of some of the stones with wax disks and rice paper. (very carefully!)

Jacob Wirth, of the Boston German restaurant "Jacob Wirth" was my grandfather, "Baba" and Tony Randall was my father's cousin, which is why he's in the family category of my cemeteries here.

Looking for Jane and Frank Lindsey in NH, Ed Hood in Boston or Mississippi (Warhol factory member) and Clarence Hickox in Mass.

Jacob Wirth Sr.
Hi,

I'm just wondering if you have been able to find who Jacob Wirth's parents were and how many siblings he had. I know that researching is time time consuming. Could you give me anyone or a place that I could look for the information?

Please reply,

RE: the Wirths in Boston
Elisa,

This is the information that I have on the Wirth family. It isn't much.

"Angelica Wirth was born 09 October 1856 at Frankfurt, Strkbg. Hessen, Germany. Her parents were Peter and Anna Galila Roth Wirth. Angelica was a Protestant. Grandfather Wirth was a fisherman. He lived on the main river in Germany. He could look out his bedroom window and see his fishnets in the rain. One morning, he found fish his nets empty. Several mornings the fish in the nets were dead. He decided to find out what was going on so he watched from the window and saw a man monkeying around in his fish nets. This raised his temper, so he picked up a brick and threw it at the man. It came right back in the window and hit his four year old daughter in the head. She died from the blow. Grandma (Angelica) Gessel claimed it was the devil and after the little girl's death, the fish were never bothered again.

Fredrick and Angelica Wirth Gessel came from Germany to the United States. Angelica's sister was coming with them. They had everything packed and were boarding the ship to come across the ocean to America. When Angelica stepped onto the ship she saw a big white sheet in front of her. She walked off the ship and refused to go. Fredrick decided to stay behind with her. Angelica's sister stayed on the ship and went on alone. She was to wait for them in New York. When the ship was way out in the ocean, the captain committed suicide and blew up the ship. They never saw her again.

Some documents say they came in 1884 to New York if they had twin girls that were born at New York in 1883 it must have been before the twins were born. Fredrick and Angelica's marriage was abt 1884. Fredrick had a barber shop in New York City. Twin girls were born May 1883. They both passed away in October 1883. Their names were Elizabeth and Luishen. One twin had blue eyes and the other had brown eyes. That was the only way you could tell them apart. Fredrick was born 13 June 1885 in New York. He passed away 27 August 1886 probably in New Jersey. These three oldest children died of summer complaint.

Charles was born 20 October 1886 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The summer heat was too much for the family, so they sold the barber shop and moved to -----
Henry was born 13 May 1889 there.
Charles remembered when the statue of Liberty was dedicated. He was about 8 years old.

Anna A. Wirth had two brothers who settled in Boston, Massachusetts. She had a sister Eliza, who first married a Young. They had a son named Fred Young. They always called him Fritz. He lived in New York. The Wirth brothers stayed in Boston and started breweries. They have many descendants.

Fredrick Gessel came to Utah in 1892. Gottlieb his brother had come 10 years earlier; Because of the heat, the family came to Utah and stayed with Fredrick's brother uncle Gotlieb Gessel

Fredrick and Angelica remained in Cache Valley. Angelica died December 25, 1917 in Logan and was buried in the Logan City Cemetery. Fredrick died 23 January 1923 in Logan and was buried next to Angelica."

This was given to me by my husband's grandmother. Who's husband was Angelica's grandson. I've seen Angelica's name also as Anna. From what I've pieced together at this point if Angelica is a brother to your G. Grandfather Jacob. Jacob had two brothers: Henri and Charles, four sisters: Angelica, Elisa, the girl who died at the age of four and the sister that died on the ship.

I would love any information you could find. I don't know much about this family and my grandmother-in-law wants to give histories out to her children for Christmas and has ask me to put it together for her.

Thanks,

Marchelle Nielson

RE: the Wirths in Boston
Elisa,

My information says that Angelica had a sister name Elisa who was married to a Young first. I'm hoping this is the same lady you are named after.

When you find something please contact me.

Thanks,

Marchelle

Wirth's
My husband's g.g. grandmother was Angelica Wirth Gessel. She and her husband immigrated from Germany in abt the 1880's. They lived in New York where her husband was a barber and then they moved to New Jersey. He had a brother in Utah and they moved there.

It is mentioned in some history that she had a brother in Boston who had a Brewry. I can't find any information on her family or siblings. I know from the history that she had two sisters and 1-2 brothers. I do know that her parents were Peter and Anna Wirth but I would like to get more information.

Is this your line? Do you have any information?

Dorothy Wirth
Hi again Elisa,
First, thanks for the neat old ad added to the memorial for Jacob Wirth.
As for Dorothy, it's not that I prefer not to manage her memorial, but as her granddaughter you can personalize it in a way that I can't. And that's always nice :)
