Friesner Cemetery
Hello,

Did you ever receive directions to the Friesner Cemetery? I am also a Friesner descendant, and just visited the cemetery this weekend. I live in SC, and was not going to be able to wait around, after trying to make contact with the homeowners, twice. We went to the house that is at the end of the long lane where the cemetery is, and no one answered, so we crossed the fence, and took pictures. I don't know what else to do in a case like this. The cemetery is in desperate need of attention, and I would like to organize us, the descendants of those buried there, to fix this cemetery up. Please contact me, my email address is
aikentoquilt2@yahoo.com...my name is Debbie Rosenbloom. I see you are in Ohio, and I am willing to come back, in the fall, if we can get something organized. The cemetery is about to be swallowed up due to neglect.

Thank you...
Michael:

I cannot tell you how much it means to me to be able to visit the photos of my father's grave since I live so far away... I can visit these photos often and feel closer to him. Thank you for taking these photos. Your kindness and unselfish act means so much to the families of the graves you photograph. Thank you.

RE: John Bowes
Hi Michael,

You are so kind to pursue this. The information you have for Mary Bowe matches. The surname for the family appears in different records as Bow, Bows, Bowe and Bowes, so I am not troubled by the Elmwood Cemetery records indicating Bowe. And the date of death for Mary matches my information.

It is sad that Mary's headstone is missing, but it was probably one of the older stones. The John Bowe headstone looks too new to be from his death in 1854. If I am correct about that, either his original stone is also missing or it was placed long after his death, perhaps to place him by Mary. Do the cemetery records give us any clues to that?

It is still very puzzling why the small mausoleum in St Mary Cemetery only has the three different generations of Bowes men. Do the library records include any information that would tell us when the mausoleum was erected or who paid for it? Is that something the church would have?

Of course I will let you know if I find any answers, but it has been enormously helpful to have your help as a local person with knowledge and access to local records.

If you would like to reach me directly, my email address is: ksonnabend@roadrunner.com.

I really appreciate your help and any progress you can make. It is a shame that some grave sites have been disrespected. Thank you Michael!

RE: John Bowes
This is curious. John's daughter Hanoria was buried in Elmwood Cemetery next to the John Bowe marker, but her obituary says she was buried next to her mother (Mary Murphy Bowes). The small mausoleum at St Mary Cemetery I am told holds John Bowes, his son Thomas and his grandson William (by son James). If the John Bowe marker was intended for Mrs. John Bowes (who died 21 years after John and 42 years before Hanoria), they got the dates wrong for her. And there is no findagrave memorial for Mary Murphy Bowes.

Unless Mary wasn't Catholic, I wonder why she wouldn't have been buried next to John in the mausoleum. It may be that when John was buried at St Mary Cemetery, the plan was for Mary to be buried there also. If she wasn't, that would explain why their son Thomas (a bachelor) was buried there 69 years later. Most of the family had moved to Kansas or different parts of Ohio, and did not come back to a family plot in Lancaster.

Thank you so much for your help and the photos!

Thank you for your help and for the photos! Perhaps the next step is to contact the cemetery caretakers to check their records? Maybe the John Bowe marker was placed there decades after his death in error.

Francis Wolshire
Hi Michael,

My name is Penny Ginnery, and I am the one who recorded Pine Hill Cemetery back in 1982. You mentioned that the death date of Francis Wolshire was incorrect. No it wasn't. I took a picture of the old stone and it says 1865. He is my great great grandfather. I'm not sure what happened to the original headstone, or who replaced it with the new stone. It doesn't have the same information on it.

Francis' wife was Gartrout not Catherine.

Let me know if I can be of any more help!
