I am an electrical and computer software engineer by trade, now retired. I have been researching my relatives since 2011, most of whom lived in King & Queen County and Essex County, Virginia. Their surnames include Crow/Crowe, Dunn, Jones, Coleman, Williams, Griggs, Prince, Hayes and Nunn. My father, grandparents, great grandparents, and many aunts, uncles and cousins are buried in Smyrna Christian Church Cemetery. More than 100 close and distant relatives in all. |
Find A Grave is a great website that has helped me link ancestors and fill in details. I have tried to return the favor by supplying any information I have. Many thanks go to Find A Grave contributor "An Ashland Genealogist" for photographing headstones and making entries, corrections, and transfers.
My 97-year old mother, Emma Crowe, has been an endless source of information about our family history and relatives. I remember spending many wonderful years as a child on my grandparent's farms, visiting relatives, hunting and fishing, and just experiencing the rural life style. We now reside in Newark, Delaware, so we rarely have the opportunity to revisit our roots in Virginia.

Just thought that you would like to know that he died on 31 January and he was buried at Smyrna on 4 Feb. He was a member of the King William Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad for more than 40 years.

My Mother's lineage involves 2 Prince Family lines. Her Father's (William Carroll Prince, Sr.) line traces back to Layton Prince (1800-1846) of King and Queen County. Her Mother's (Loula Ellen (Greenstreet) Prince)Lineage traces back through HER Mother's (Rosa Ellen (Prince) Greenstreet - My Great Grandmother) Paternal lineage to William Prince (1811-?) also of King and Queen.
Granville Prince's father was Francis Johnson Prince (1813-?) of King and Queen County. There is also a Richard J Prince (1818-?) who ties into my tree.
We believe that Layton, William, Francis and Richard were most likely cousins and even possibly brothers. They all were listed as "head of family" living in St Stephens, King and Queen County area beginning in 1830 with Layton.
Dora Lee (Longest) Fogg was a cousin to me through her Father's Line.
Small world indeed!

You are welcome. My Mother was of the Prince Family. Willie has one son, Morgan Lee, that is still living.

Wow, thanks for all the info! All I remembered about Jimpaw was he had brothers named Wesley & Grover! I didn't know he had such a large family.
Jimpaw was a commercial painter, and when I was a kid he painted the Crosley station wagon on top of a pole at Atlee Auto Service on Rt. 301 in Mechanicsville! I thought that was really cool. Looks like it needs another paint job! Take a look:
And of course I don't mind you updating your page--that's the whole point of this, isn't it? I've been at this stuff for so long, & I love it! Always something new out there!

Hi Benjamin--I'm wondering if your Richard Bernard Griffith (Memorial# 90397429) might be the same Richard B. Griffith on the 1910 census in Richmond VA? This Richard was a widower with 7 young children, one of them was my step-grandfather. James Boyd Griffith married my grandmother, Hester Feeney Petterson on June 25, 1943 in Richmond. I've been into genealogy for decades, but don't remember much about his family. Just trying to "flesh out" my ever growing family tree!
Thanks a lot,
Bobbi Rollins Johnson
