The Finney's
Hi Mary Lou:
Thank you for all your compliments, you are such
a wonderful person.
I stay local with the cemeteries and go at all
times hoping for good light. This wasn't always
the case, if a memorial needed a photo I just
took it, no matter what the light conditions
were. I am replacing a lot of the photos that
I took with better ones. Who knows I may replace
those Finney photos again!
I just sent another edit to Hope about the
Harvey Finney memorial in Virginia. I explained
to her in better detail why we wanted a hyper-
link to his Wenham Cemetery memorial. I also
told her that if she did not know how to do a
hyperlink, she could transfer the memorial to
me and I would do it for her and then transfer
the memorial back. I don't know if she will,
she does not know me, she may not trust that
I will transfer it back.
I also want to tell you that Silvanus Finney
at Chiltonville Cemetery, Plymouth has an
old gravestone behind the newer one. I took
a photo the best that I could, it is very
close to his newer one. I will probably re-
take the photos when there are no shadows.
Silvanus' memorial is a good example of
hyperlinks. He is linked to his brothers,
Ezra and Robert. The parents so far are not
found so they could not be linked that way.
My friend Caryn the creator of Silvanus'
memorial does not know how to do a hyper-
link either. She transferred Silvanus'
memorial to me and I did it for her, then
transferred it back. If you go into Silvanus'
memorial you will see how you can toggle
back and forth from one brother to another.
Silvanus' memorial number is: 91824958.
Hopefully we will see the sun tomorrow!
Have a great weekend.

RE: Finney
Hi Mary Lou:
I have transferred Harvey Finney's memorial
back to you. So far Hope has not done a
hyperlink. I will give her more time and
keep checking. After a reasonable amount of
time I will ask her again. If she does the
hyperlink I will ask you to transfer this
memorial back to me and I'll do a hyperlink
back. But as the memorial is I would leave
the links, at least you can go back and
forth from one memorial to the other. If
the hyperlinks are done we can remove some
of the links because you will be able to
toggle back and forth from one memorial to
the other. I hope that I didn't confuse you,
(sometimes I confuse myself!).
Have a good day,

RE: Harvey Finney
Hi Mary Lou:
Usually when a person has two gravestones, in
two different locations such as Harvey, a link
to each memorial is best (use the Find A Grave hyperlink).
The reason is because somebody else can enter a
memorial for Harvey at Wenham Cemetery when they
see there is not a memorial for him there if it
is deleted. Also you can not be sure that the
person who created the memorial for Harvey at
Arlington National Cemetery will do the family
links, most often volunteers ignore requests.
Personally I think it best to do a hyperlink and
ask the creator of the memorial at Arlington
Cemetery to do one back. That way it will be
clear that Harvey is buried at Arlington National
Cemetery, but has a memorial gravestone at
Wenham Cemetery.
What do you think?

More Finney Information!
Let's get confused even further!!
Found a book on line:
"The Name and Family of
James Albert Finney and a
Genealogical Record of his
Direct Line to 1952".

This book is saying (page 17) that Caleb
was son of Sylvanus Finney and Susanna
(Doten) Pratt. This contradicts William T.
Davis' book which says he was son to 2d
Ephraim. This book also says that
Caleb was a Twin to his brother Solomon.

Have you ever seen this book before?
It has a lot about the Finney family
in Ohio.

I'm am looking at this as a puzzle.
It will get solved.
I will see if Town Hall in Plymouth will
let me look at their registers.
Hopefully there will be some questions
I have printed all the information that you
shared with me and I copied the information
found in the Plymouth vital records book.
Maybe tomorrow if the sun is out (wishful
thinking) I will go back to Chiltonville to
see if the back of the gravestones can be
Thank you again,

Caleb Finney b. abt. 1774
Hi Mary Lou:
The source of my information for Caleb Finney's
Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth
Part 2 - Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families
by William T. Davis, Published 1899
[p. 109]

It states:
Caleb, son of 2nd Ephraim, m. 1799, Lydia
Covington and had Ephraim 1810, m. Deborah
and Susan Churchill; Benjamin D., m. Mary
Ann Churchill and Adeline Clark; Caleb;
and Mary, m. Reuben Leach. He m., 2nd,
1817 Phebe Leonard.

The above mentioned book has parts one and
two in the same volume.
Though it states that Caleb is the son of
2nd Ephraim I could not find any info on
the 2d Ephraim.
This is only a book, vital records are
always better. Some have mentioned that this
book has mistakes in it.
I do have a copy of the vital records of
Plymouth here, but did not find a birth
for Caleb, but I did find his two marriages
and his death in 1844. If you need any of
this info let me know.

Thank you once again. You are so generous with
your research and it is appreciated.

RE: Ephraim M Finney
I went back to Chiltonville yesterday to find
the gravestones of: 1)James H. Finney and his
wife Eldora. 2) Ephraim M. Finney 3) Deborah
Knowing that I had previously photographed all
the gravestones in that area, I was puzzled as
to where their gravestones could be.
I found their inscriptions on the back of
the other Finney's gravestones. So this is how
the gravestones are:
1) Front of gravestone:
John E. Finney 1889 - 1918
Back of gravestone:
James H. Finney 1856 - 1913 and
Eldora F. his wife.
2)Front of gravestone:
Susan Finney, died July 25, 1896, etc.
Back of gravestone:
Ephraim (M?) Finney. The back of the gravestone
is very difficult to read. I will have to go
back when the light is just right and try to
read it.
3) Front of gravestone:
Ephraim H. Finney, son of Ephraim & D.H., died
June 10, 1866.
Back of gravestone:
Deborah H. wife of Ephraim and their daughter
I know a transcription of the cemetery was done
in 2001, but it has many, many mistakes, and
I want to verify what was found in the trans-
criptions to what the gravestone actually says.
The transcriptions are useful but I'm not
taking them for their word.
I printed the information that you sent to me.
I just have to straighten out: was there both
a Ephraim Finney and a Ephraim M. Finney? If
so where is Ephraim Finney's gravestone?
I think I need the exact transcriptions before
I can go any further. I think the front and
back of the gravestones are going to be
relative to each other. Once I get this
straightened out a light will go off in my
Mary Lou, I can't thank you enough for the
information that you shared. We will be in
touch. I will let you know my conclusions
on this.
P.S. I added sharper photos to your memorial
of Caleb Finney, memorial #86013999.
Have a great day,

RE: Ephraim M Finney
Thank you!
My biggest problem with the information that I
am finding is I am only finding the name
"Ephraim" with no middle initial "M".
I know the gravestone has the initial "M" and
the cemetery dept. in Plymouth has his name
with the "M". All the vital records that I
am finding do not have the middle initial.
Perhaps the "M" was put on the gravestone by
From Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth:
Caleb son of 2d Ephraim m. 1799
Lydia Covington and had Ephraim, 1810 m.
Deborah and Susan Churchill.
That is just one example of many which
do not have the middle initial "M".
I am going to put this research away for now,
when I do it again tomorrow I'll have a fresh
I do think your information is true. I added
a memorial for Susan (Churchill) Finney. I
did not link her to Ephraim yet, but she
is linked to her parents.
Mary Lou thank you for being a wonderful
person. If you need anything in Plymouth
let me know.
Take Care,
