Bio Photo My Grant-Stuart Family Heritage:

"Yea, I have a goodly heritage." - Psalm 16:6

The Grant-Stuart side of my family tree is my mother's side. Much of my genealogical lineage has been documented by the NSDAR and Archives Canada. The NSDAR file contains my lineage from myself back to my fifth great-grandfather, Josiah Graves, Sr.. The Archives Canada files contain my Grant-Stuart lineage back to James Stuart, The 1st. Earl of Moray.

I am a school teacher and a writer/author. I also enjoy doing genealogical research and documentation very much. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education, and an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling-School Counselor. Obviously, I am a proud member of the Clan Grant and the Clan Stuart with direct ancestral lineage to James Stuart, The 1st. Earl of Moray.

Lastly, I have direct ancestral lineage to these three Revolutionary War Patriots as follows: (1) Josiah (Joseph) Graves, Jr., (2) Josiah Graves, Sr., and (3) Francis Beard, who are on the Grant-Stewart side of my family tree. I also have direct ancestral lineage to these Revolutionary War Loyalists as follows: (1) Dr. James Stuart, and (2) Johan Adam Papst, who are also on the Grant-Stewart side of my family tree.

In conclusion, the Lord has blessed me with a wonderful life, a wonderful family, and many wonderful ancestors of whom I am very proud.

Do you know if Josiah Graves had a daughter named Catherine Graves Rowe Harder? She married Adam Harder and lived in Michigan. She is my husbands ggg grandmother. I have been trying to connect the two but so far no luck.
Thanks, Marsha

Dr. James Stewart (Stuart)
HI Karen,

I just found your Dr. James Stuart information on Find-a-GRave tonight. I am descended from Dr. James thru his son George, who married Barbara Ferguson. Many years ago I spent a day at the National Archives in Ottawa so my proofs come primarily thru wills. George stuart was also a Capt. during the War of 1812 and I have a few copies of those records. But it has been many years since I worked on this line. George and Barbara are my 3rd great grandparents. Their grandson, Henry Hodgins, moved to Hudson, Wisconsin in the 1860's.

If you would be interested in sharing information my e-mail address is

Josiah Sr.
Snow, Graves, Dennison and a deaf man.

Dr. Ledyard (at Fishkill) writes to Dr. Cutter (at Peekskill) on July 21, 1777- "Snow is dead and old Graves followed him without much ceremony- The deaf Man is just gone and also Dennison died this morning. If I should go on much farther with my dead List I believe you will think I am about clearing the Hospital, but I do assure you they would not obey my Orders to live, so I was obliged to give them a Furlow."

A History of the Cutter Family of New England by Benjamin Cutter, William Richard Cutter. The Compliation of the late Dr. Benjamin Cutter of Woburn,Mass.; Boston: David Clapp & Son 1871. page 321.

You can contact me through this website and give me your private email so we can discuss this further. After being contacted by the decendant and reading his son's pension and looking at Mass. Soldiers and Sailors Book, I concur with him that this Graves is the same man.

Josiah Graves Sr
Is there an actual grave for Josiah Graves in this cemetery or a memorial stone? There was soldier named Graves who died at Fishkill Supply Depot in July 1777 according to a letter a doctor from there wrote. A descendant feels that this Graves is his ancestor Josiah Sr. but you have him in this cemetery. Unless he died near Pittsfield, they would not have brought him there for burial especially having died of smallpox ( mentioned in his son's pension file). Have you traced Watson's Company to being in the Berkshires in July 1777? Please contact me at
