RE: Salmon Harding
Hi, Heather: I understand your confusion. The Harriet Mellen buried in Richland, NY was the daughter of Henry and Alice Harris Mellen. She was born in 1831 and died in 1927 at the age of 96. Her obituary appeared in the Sandy Creek News on December 8, 1927, page 13. The other Harriet Mellen was the daughter of Nathan and Polly Fox Mellen. She was born in 1795 and died in 1863. Her husband was Salmon Harding (1794-1838). They were the parents of Henry S., Phila E., and John M. On the 1860 census for Sandy Creek you will see that Harriet and son John (he died in 1861) were living with John H. and Phila Hubbs who had been married in 1853. Phila died in 1917 and her obituary can be found in The Oswego Palladium (June 29, 1917). The obituary distinctly says that she was the daughter of Solomon [Salmon] and Harriet Mellen Harding. Her husband, John, died in December, 1921. A death notice was published in the Sandy Creek News on December 15, 1921, page 4.
I have only recently begun a study of the Mellen family and I can assure you they are not an easy clan to trace. I hope this information helps. Best wishes, Natalie J. Woodall

Salmon S. Harding
Hi! May I offer a correction for this man? his wife was Harriet Mellen (1795-1863). Phila was Salmon and Harriet's daughter. She married a man named John Hubbs in 1856. They lived in Sandy Creek, NY.
