Judy, I graduated from Griffith High School, and Viola Francis was my great-aunt (my grandfather's sister). Have you seen Walter's Find A Grave memorial)? I have more, so tell me more.
Hi Judy, I do not have any further info on Thomas or Hazel. My suggestion would be to go or call vigo Co library. They have access (I found that on-line) to his obit April 5, 1974 on page 5 of the Tribune (local paper). They can send you a copy of it for small fee or you can make a copy for 10 cents-that would possibly have information that would be helpful to you-ie: parents names, wife, children, etc. Hazel is his wife as she shares a tombstone with him. Let me know. geraldine

Still trying to figure out which section he was in ... so many stones. I will keep searching.

You are very welcome!!! I am assuming you are talking about Oak Hill in Hammond and not Gary. Either way ... both are open to the public although I'd make certain I had someone to go with me if you go to the Gary one.
The Hammond Oak Hill has been taken over by the Township Trustee ... I think that is all complete now. Kara has worked tirelessly on getting this place back on track ... all on a volunteer basis and she's done a fantastic job! Kara still organizes clean up and grave recovery outings so if you're interested in volunteering some time just let me know and I'll get your e-mail address to her and she can add you to her contact list to keep you updated.
It's a beautiful cemetery and I know I feel much better now that it's been taken over. My great, great grandparents along with several other relatives are there and in three more years my great great grandfather's grave will be 100 years old ... I do NOT want anything happening to that grave!!!
Many of the stones had sunk into the ground even back in the 1990s when the South Suburban Genealogical Society came and did a grave stone reading to create a listing of stones in the cemetery so many graves were missed because of it. That could be one of the reasons why your relatives were not found until recently. I have not been there in a while as I live about three hours from there but I am assuming the gates are open like any other cemetery; however, I am pretty sure you can call the township trustee's office and find that out. But first I will check with Kara and see if she knows and get back to you later today.
