My father was Thomas C McGiffin (1929-1991) and his parents and my grandparents were William Junkin McGiffin (1893-1955)and Nell Florence Belz McGiffin (1895-1969). W J (William Junkin) McGiffin (son of Nathaniel 1851-1921) and May Junkin McGiffin (1856-1898) related to the Cheney's and McGiffin's in the Great Falls area in Montana (where he was born) and in Fairfield Iowa. Nathaniel's father was Norton McGiffin and son of Sarah Huston Quail, and was one of five boys, Thomas, James, Norton, Nathaniel and Philo Norton (and my grt grandfather Nathaniel) |
On my mother Harriet's side my grandparents were Harry H. Bergman (Jacob and Philippena Bergman) and Alice Dodge Bergman. Grandpa Harry's roots go back to his grandfather, Jacob Bergman known as a Butterfield Stage stop and mail driver for the Butterfield Stage Co (and Civil War Veteran) William M Godfrey who was one of California's first photographers in LA in the early 1860-90's and William Dresser Huntington.

I received the flash drive and have just loaded the files to my drive. I see that you included the Battle of the Yalu for me to read electroically. Thank you so much. The other files promise to be a good supply of reading matter. What do you want me to do with the flash drive?

Thank you so much. I sent an email. We took a snap shot of it about 25 yrs ago so will need to hunt for it.

I read "the return..." on my Kindle s couple of years ago.. unless I got it at the public library before my stroke. It has been about that long.
Iwill email you my postal address.

I have never seen nor heard of the book, but will look for it. Because of my disability, consequence of a paralytic stroke I can no longer hold a priinted book to read and am limited to Amazon Kinfle. I will seek it there, and if I can only find it in print eill request that it be made available in that format.
I recently had to replace my Mac; the new one has no CD drive, which suggests rhat Apple assumes that we will all use the Web for external storafe. I am interested in the documents you describe but only in excerpts rather than the whole, since it is beyond my capaity in that format. I may have to acquire an external CD drive if this keeps up. I think there may be flash drives with adequate capacity for a CD worth of content, which may be the coming thing. My external hard drive has a Terabyte of capacity which is ample for anything I want and can load. In the yars I WAS ACTIVELY EMPLYED i was involved in planning a lsrge mainframe installation of less total capacity than larger current laptops. We were offered an early 1TB store, that took up an entire room. My drive is the size of a deck of cards.

I no longer have a copy of the Shipmate article but if you would like an extensive account of his history you could write to TonyaWhite@usna,com, the publications editor of the Alumni Association or to Timothy.Woodbury@usna.com, the obituaries editor. The plebe year travails of a fictional descendant were recounted in one of Jim Webb's novels, as I recall. Good read.The UsNA Alumni Asn is usna,com rather than usna.edu
|Mimi||Nellie Godfrey (Dixon, Breen,)|
Nellie is the sister of Alice I Bergman and lived for a while in a small house near location of stage stop before her death. Her picture hung in the Bergman museum and Alice D. Berman showed it to us when we visited her. She was so hospitable, friendly and welcoming and remembered Leila Hewlett Dixon and Cecile Dixon Wood (My husbands mother and grandmother). She told us many family stories during our visit.
Could you post that picture. It is a large one that was colorized. She has blondish hair and round shaped face. (Later someone thought it might be Caroline Bergman, but Alice D. Bergman assured us it was Nellie. My mother in law resembles her greatly. Cecile would be her granddaughter.
Thank you. Kathy & Dennis

I see that like me, everyone wants to know whether you are descended from or otherwise related to him. As Wikipedia will tell you, Philo is a legend at the Naval Academy and it would be good to know that his line continues, as well as that he really existed, as his memorial and Wikipedia attest. There was an excellent biographical article a couple of years ago in Shipmate, the Alumni magazine.
Hello! I transferred Philo to your management. Are you also interested in managing his remaining family members? If you go to the Washington Cemetery and look up the remaining family members, I'd be fine on transferring them to you as well, Best Wishes!

Welcome to find a Grave. The transfers are my pleasure. I'm very happy that the memorials for Orlando and Annie Bergman are now in the care of a family member, where they belong.
