Henry J. Ramsdell
Find A Grave Memorial# 96610284

After finding that his death certificate lists him as Hiram J. Ramsdell I believe that the author of his obituary made an incorrect assumption that his first name was Henry. He appears to have used the initials H.J. which is not unusual as many men used initials instead of spelling out their first name. Even his appointment as Registrar of Wills is as Hiram J. Ramsdell. Unfortunately, the Henry was used in the 1897 biography and the library systems also have him listed as an author under Henry J. Ramsdell. Haven't checked WorldCat to see if they have him under Hiram as well as Henry.

So, I have changed the first name to Hiram and am putting Henry in the nickname section.

RE: 18th Pennsylvania Captured
Page,

I knew about Cook and Howard but not the other two. The recommended changes to Austin's Find-A-Grave memoral were posted yesterday and it looks much better.

I grew up in the DC area, born in Quantico (dad was a Marine) and graduated from Woodbridge High in Woodbridge VA. Left the area to join the USAF and have seldom been back. So it's hard to do research when you are so far away from the information (lots of it is not digitized or requires a membership to see it).

I was going to recommend you get Austin's pension and military records to verify his capture. You are also very correct on the promotion dates. I'm reading a new diary written by Captain James Weaver of the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry and he goes several months before his commission finally shows up.

Thanks for the new information on the captures from Mosby's Fairfax Raid. If you are interested, I'll send you the chapter on this from my book.

Tony
