Family Research in Germany
Hi.
Family research in Germany is difficult, because many, many resources have been destroyed or misplaced during the multiple conflicts that ravished the continent during the past 200 years. The items that are available are not online either. Just very few resources are made available online. It would take thousands of people to go through centuries of archives and organize and catalog them all. You would to go to those archives yourself to find stuff, physically be there for research.

Another problem in your search will be, that graves are not forever in most other countries, but the US. The concept of perpetual care for grave sites, like it is being done in the US, is unknown to most parts of the rest of the world. Usually there is a predetermined period of repose (usually 15-25 years) after which the burial plot will be re-used for a new burial. Since the concept of embalming the dead (like in the US) is also unknown in most parts of the world, there is no ground contamination and the corpses decompose naturally within a few decades. The family (or whoever) may purchase an extension of that period of repose. On other words the plots are being leased, not owned like in the States. Chances to find a burial plot from the 19th century are slim to zero.
One exception: If a deceased has been deemed noteworthy, some sort of celebrity or historically significant, the city (where the cemetery is located) might take over the care for that grave. Or if it's an "old historic" family, which owns a family mausoleum or plot and continues to pay for that "lease" as mentioned above.

And, of course, of the archives that are available are in German. Then there is the fact, that over the centuries the country's borders have shifted. So, what used to be in Germany, after WW II, is no longer, e.g. Eastern Prussia, Lothringen, parts of now the Czech Republic.

Old German script (handwriting) is different and difficult to read.

Discouraged yet? – here are some websites that might be of help:

http://www.genealogienetz.de/genealogy.html

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/rg/guide/Germany6.asp

http://www.progenealogists.com/top50genealogy2011.htm

There is no central death-registration in Germany like the SSDI in the US. Cemeteries are mostly owned by either the city, a Catholic or Protestant congregation. Again, graves are not perpetual.

RE: Mary Beavers Clack #96434144
Hi Heather,

The photos on the memorial were not mine so I cannot place them at the correct memorial. The next time I am in the Sevierville area I will go by and photograph them. If you put in a photo request maybe someone will place a photo sooner. I live about 40 miles from the cemetery and just go by there when going to the Smoky Mountians.

For anyone in the area the memorial # is 96434144 at the Forks of the Little Pigeon Cemetery, Sevierville, Sevier County, TN.

Thanks

Mary Beavers Clack #96434144
Thanks for letting me know about this duplicate memorial. Looks like there is some confusion about the cemetery name. I see the whole cemetery is listed twice. Report this to Find A Grave and they should be able to take care of it. I think Mary Beaver Clack's original listing is in the correct cemetery, Forks of the Little Pigeon Cemetery, Sevierville, Sevier County, TN.

Again Thanks I have deleted my Listing

RE: Jacob Rickenbach
Regarding John J. Rickenbach in Greenwood Cemetery, O'Hara Township, Allegheny Co PA. It is quite likely that you have correctly identified him, but I have no source in Greenwood records to confirm that. I did a bit of looking on Ancestry, and at least 1 other researcher has identified him as you do, with the same parents. But past that, this person does not trace him any further back. The Family Tree belongs to Patrick McHugh.

I have more information on his daughter. Lizzie Rickenbach Byerly, whose tombstone is in the same plot, married to John Byerly, as far as I can tell. There is also an Anna M Byerley in the plot, and a stillborn infant, both children of John and Elizabeth.

Nearby, there is a First Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Sharpsburg. There are various people in their death records that seem to match, but the last name is spelled Beierlein.

But of the Rickenbachs, I have no information that seems to help you at all. Both Anna M and John J were removed from Strohm's cemetery, one of the oldest graveyards in the area. I don't think there are any official records for it at all. And I really can't imagine why they were buried there. It is graveyard in the country, and most of the interments were related to old pioneer families from the area.

Let me know if you want me to trace the Byerleys. It won't be easy, as the name is spelled various ways, but I can try.

RE: Jacob Rickenbach
I don't have much more info. The interment entry refers to a page in our lot book (Page 99).

Owned by Mrs. John Byerley, bought on October 12, 1895 for $150. Section 4, range 10, Lot 2.

Oct. 9, 1895 - Annie M. Byerley - #1057
Jan. 12, 1898 - unnamed Byerley - #1230
Nov 7, 1904 - unknown (Anna M. Rickenbach)- #1906
Nov 7, 1904 - John J. Rickenbach - #1907
Feb. 28 - Elizabeth Rickenbaugh - #6090

I may be able to find more on at least some of these people through one of the local churches. Let me look and get back to you.

Diane

RE: Butler , Pigg, & Flowers Families
Make sure she has plenty of time to look through the graveyard. It is terribly overgrown in parts and in some disarray. I know this is true of many graveyards, but when your ancestors are there it brings extra sadness.
