|My name is Sandy Miller, a life time resident of Caddo county, Oklahoma. Growing up in the Broxton community, I became very interested in my family history and in the history of Caddo county. This interest was passed down to me by my aunt, Allean Lee, who lived in the Boone community that was located west of Apache. A strong respect was born in me for our cemeteries. I began collecting information on the people buried in the various cemeteries, particularly Anadarko, Apache, Cyril, Cement and Verden (now a part of Grady county) in the 1970's. I did a complete canvassing of Anadarko's Memory Lane Cemetery in the 1990's and again in 2000. The information was then put online on the Caddo county Rootsweb site. Many of the individuals listed, not only had no tombstone, but weren't listed in the cemetery records. This took a lot of time and research, but was a labor of love.|
Nancy Charlton, Ethel Buie and myself, with some members of the Caddo county Genealogical Society, canvassed all of the cemeteries in Caddo county in 2000. These too are online. Jim and Pat Tustison spent many hours photographing the tombstones in many cemeteries.
Thanks to my aunt, I have a genuine respect and gratitude for those who lived out their lives in Caddo county and are buried in the various cemeteries throughout our communities. No Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it used to be called, was complete without putting flowers and American flags on the graves of our relatives and those who died keeping our great country free in the various wars we have been involved in.
I am still in search of those elusive individuals who were buried in Memory Lane, and there are many.
