RE: Did Elizabeth have a sister?
Hi Velena, (my email is jjmcard@comcast.net)

Elizabeth had the following siblings:
Susan, b1823
James, b1826
Maryette b1830
David S., born 1831
Lucinda, b1839

The 1850 census of Waterford shows:
Family #36/36:
Hannah Leland, 55, New Brunswick (This is the widow of Benjamin Leland)
James Leland, 24, PA
David Leland, 19, PA
Susan Leland, 27, PA
Maryette Leland, 20, PA
Lucinda Leland, 11, PA
Hannah Shephardson, 18, PA

I found your Hannah Leland living with the John Fritts family. There is no notation as to how she is related or why she is living there. However, she is living next door to my A. C. Stafford who is Elizabeth Leland's brother in law. So, there must be some connection.

Here are my misc. notes about the Leland families in Waterford:

1814: Elizabeth Leland born in New Brunswick.

1847: Benjamin Leland is buried at Waterford, Pa. Cemetery, died February 11, 1847, aged 72 (born 1775).

1847: I could find no probate for Benjamin Leland in Erie County, PA.

1850: Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Erie County, Waterford, 25 July.p294:
Note that Miner Thomas and H.C. Stafford are neighbors! Their children, Laura Thomas and Edward Steele Stafford, weren't even born yet and married in 1878!
Family #33/33:
Miner Thomas, 30, Farmer, 600, Born PA
Rachel Thomas, 21, New York
Frank Thomas, 1, PA
Morgan Thomas, 17, Farmer, PA
Family #34/34 is James Moore family
Family #35/35:
H. C. Stafford, 35, Farmer, VT
Elizabeth Stafford, 35, NJ
Samantha A. Stafford, 12, PA
J. P. Stafford, F, 10, PA
H. C. Stafford, M, 7, PA
W. F. Stafford, F, 5, PA
H. H. Stafford, M, 3, PA
M. M. Stafford, F, 1, PA
Family #36/36:
Hannah Leland, 55, New Brunswick
James Leland, 24, PA
David Leland, 19, PA
Susan Leland, 27, PA
Maryette Leland, 20, PA
Lucinda Leland, 11, PA
Hannah Shephardson, 18, PA

1876: An Ansel T. Leland owned land NE of McKean (Source: "Historical Atlas of Erie County, Pennsylvania, 1876"

1882: There is also an A. T. Leland, 1839-1882 in the Waterford, Pa. Cemetery, along with his wife, Mary Jane, 1844-1882.

1850: I am assuming Hannah and Benjamin Leland ARE the parents of Elizabeth Leland Stafford, because I found Hannah Leland, age 55, born New Brunswick, on the 1850 Erie County Census, living NEXT DOOR to Elizabeth Leland Stafford and her husband H. C. Stafford. Further, this Hannah Leland has a daughter listed on the census named Maryette Leland, born 1830, so this is the Maryetta that married a Charles Wm. Steel Anderson and noted Hannah and Benjamin Leland as her parents on her marriage record. Hannah Shephardson, born Pa. 1832, is living with Hannah Leland on the 1850 census.

1853: Hannah Leland was the wife of Benjamin, per marriage record of Maryetta Leland, born 8 June 1830. She married Charles Wm. STEEL Anderson 15 May 1853, presumably in Erie County, Pa. Could this be a connection? (Source: Keystone Kuzzins 2/96, p90)

1874: Ansel Leland died, leaving a will written 21 April 1873, McKean, Erie County, Pennsylvania. He names his son, Ansel T. Leland, gives furniture to his granddaughter Harriet E. Wagner; gives to the six chilren of "my deceased daughter, Hannah B. Waner, formerly wife of Samuel B. Wagner of East Mill Creek", the residence.

1880: Federal Census of Erie County for Elizabeth Leland Stafford shows her parents were born in New Brunswick. (Source: LDS Library Film 1255127, NA Film Number T9-1127, Page Number 215B)

1882: 20 June, Ansel Thurman Leland died, a resident of McKean Township, informant, S. B. Wagner. George W. Stafford and Thomas Sterrett were witnesses to the will. Will names following relations: "Oldest son Frank H. Leland; second son, Orse P. Leland; daughtere Eva May B. Leland; (Source: Erie County, Pennsylvania Probate Microfilm #8467)

Leland obits, per Keystone Kuzzins 2/96, p78:

Mrs. Mary Leland, in Erie, 20 June 1899, age 58, (Erie Dispatch, 21 June 1899)
Mrs. Mary Jane Leland, in McKean, 15 April 1882, age 37 (Erie Morning Dispatch, 25 April 1882)

Elias Mabie
Do you know if your 3rd great grandfather, Elias Mabie, had a son named Jacob Mabie, born 1781 who had a son named Elias B. Mabie, born 31 May 1802 in Delaware Co., NY? This Elias B. Mabie married a Louisa Howe and moved to Boone county Illinois in the early 1840.

Hannah Fritts
Last fall, local volunteers planted daffodils at the graves of a number of local "orphans". Hanna was one of the ones selected, see:

http://sdhistoricalsociety.org/SDHSWeb/Stories/DDDD.htm

The flowers should be blooming nicely is a couple weeks.

Thank so much for the update on Hannah. Do you have any biographical info or a photo to share? I would love to learn more about her.

Her name has always stuck me as very interesting.

There used to be a Ranger at the Grand Canyon South Rim named Fritts.
